Fatal vehicle accidents can result in the filing of wrongful death claims, if the death occurs due to the negligence or carelessness of another driver or person. For instance, if a driver disregarded a stop sign, sped through an intersection, and hit another car, causing the death of the other driver, then the driver who violated traffic laws is potentially liable for the wrongful death of the second driver. In some cases, the driver's actions may have been purely accidental, in that he or she had no intent to disregard the stop sign and become involved in a traffic accident. Nonetheless, the law in many states makes the driver liable, whether or not he or she intended to hurt the other driver. If the driver was negligent in disregarding traffic laws, then he or she may be sued for wrongful death by the survivors of the deceased driver. Through a wrongful death suit, the driver's surviving family is entitled to recover compensation from the person responsible for the wrongful death; such compensation may include pain and suffering, medical expenses, funeral costs, and/or loss of income or support for the deceased's dependent family.
