The recent events with the Virginia Tech killer Seung-Hui Cho, clearly exposes the problems in the Federal Gun Control Law. The most disturbing fact of this tragedy truly is that he legally acquired the guns that he used to commit the worst killing spree in history. How is it that in the United States we perform thorough background checks on criminals yet, do not follow the same logic when it comes to searching the backgrounds of those with a history of mental illness?
Some of the gun control issues that need improvement are:
- Gun Sales
- The Brady Bill
- Background Checks
- State Laws
It really does not make sense that a person with a mental illness could go in to a store and ever purchase a gun. If legislature do not pass laws to protect the US citizens from such an issue from ever happening, such as selling firearms to mentally ill people, then we are in serious need of reform. How can we as a society justify the death of American citizens on the premise that the individual right to bear arms takes precedence over the safety of our people?
There may be a waiting period to buy guns, granted this seems to be a good policy. Why is there not a federal law that effectively controls the mentally ill from ever purchasing a gun? With our efforts to stop terrorists, you would have thought that some one would have considered making some revisions to our current weapons laws during the creation of the Patriot Act.
