Last year, when a University of Wisconsin student Brittany Zimmerman was slain in her Madison apartment, there was some inquiry into the way her 911 call was handled. A judge in the city of Madison has said that a decision of whether or not to proceed with a wrongful death lawsuit, brought by the girl’s family and fiancé, will be reached by next Friday.
The plaintiffs say that the authorities in Wisconsin were slow to react to Zimmerman’s call for help just before she was killed last April. Apparently, the Dane County Executive, Kathleen Falk had received a report from a consultant, which concluded that a catastrophic event would occur at the county’s 911 call center if she did not respond to the problems of understaffing and lack of equipment.
The family of Zimmerman is suing Falk and a former 911 dispatcher, Rita Gahagan, who mishandled the call. Falk’s attorney denies negligence, and claims that Falk was not legally bound to follow the advice of the consultant.
